In skin whitening, there are three popular ingredients: kojic acid, glutathione, and vitamin C. Here’s what you need to know:
Also known as GSH, Glutathione is actually a nutrient that is normally produced by the body, found in every cell. Fun fact: did you know that it started out as a means to prevent diseases? In 1921, Japanese doctors used Glutathione to restore and repair liver enzymes to normal conditions. Incidentally, they found that their patients’ complexions became whiter. This is because Glutathione enhances the conversion of eumelanin (dark brown pigmentation) to Phaeomelanin (reddish white color).
Kojic Acid was formally discovered in 1989. It comes from mushrooms native to Japan and is a by-product of the fermentation process that produces sake, an alcoholic drink in Japan.
Kojic Acid works in two ways: First, it removes dead skin cells, oil and dirt through exfoliation. Second, Kojic Acid inhibits the production of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color.
We usually associate Vitamin C with immunity but it is also great for the skin. For one, it regulates the production of collagen, which is the fibrous protein that keeps the skin firm and supple. Vitamin C also helps combat the skin damages caused by prolonged exposure to the sun such as wrinkles, dry skin and premature signs of aging.
